Koh Samui is an island in the Gulf of Thailand. It lies 84 km. east of Surat Thani provincial capital. Koh Samui measures some 21 km. at its widest span, 25 km. at its longest span, and is encircled by coastal lowlands filled with powder-white beaches of different landscapes and characteristics . It is famous for luxuriant coconut plantations. Climbing one of the coconut trees on the beach like a monkey to pick coconuts can be quite an adventurous event. A wide range of facilities, resorts , accommodations, shops, restaurants, entertainment establishments suitable for all budgets are available among natural surroundings and distinctively relaxed atmosphere. Koh Samui is known among local and overseas tourists as “The Paradise Island in the Gulf of Thailand.
Koh Samui is easy of access. Bangkok Airways operates a direct flight from Bangkok to Koh Samui. It is the most convenient way to travel. If you find that the tickets are rather expensive, you can choose from one of the low-cost airlines a flight to Surat Thani province, and take a speedboat to Koh Samui.
Take the Thonburi – Paktor Highway and drive along until you get to Paktor-Ratchaburi junction. Turn left into Highway 41 toward Chumphon and drive on for 644 km. to get to Surat Thain. Drive along until you come to Ban Nai intersection, and turn left. Drive 60 km. from the city center to Don Sak to get a ferry to Koh Samui.
At Southern Routes Bus Terminal, many companies operate a daily air-conditioned coach service between Bangkok and Surat Thani. The journey takes 10 hours. When you arrive at Surat Thani you can take another transport to get to Don Sak district. Then, take a ferry to Koh Samui. It is advisable that you start your journey from Bangkok during nighttime so that you will wake up in the morning at your destination.
Hua Lumphong Station operates a daily train service between Bangkok and Surat Thani. The train takes you to Phun Phin, which is 12 km. away from Surat Thani city center. From there, you can take another transport to Don Sak.
Getting around Koh Samui
Getting around Koh Samui is quite easy. The island is surrounded by a 50-km. Thawirat Phakdi road. A minivan service operates from 0600 hr. to 2100 hr. The fares are from 30 to 60 baht. After 2100 hr. some minivans are still be available, but the fares are likely to be slightly higher depending on the distance.
There only minicabs, not taxis. So the fares have to be negotiated. At Don Sak, many shops have motorcycles and cars for rent. The rental charges are around 200 baht per day for a motorcycle and 800 baht per day for a jeep. Motorcycle taxis are also available. The minimum fare is 30 baht, which is twice what the minivan charges.
